In this book, I explain the best practices that produce explicit business documents. These best practices use methods that are different from those used in journalism and creative writing. They will enable you to achieve business objectives through explicit writing. After learning these best practices, you will be able to write clearly, quickly, and confidently.

I have taught writing for 35 years, first as a high school English teacher, then as a writing professor at two universities, and eventually as a professor of business writing in a college of business. Between teaching positions, I was a senior staff writer in a consulting company that wrote documents for businesses, the owner of a business writing services company, and the manager of communications in a company.

If you are a manager or upper-level executive seeking to improve written communication in your company or agency, begin by reading Chapter 11, "Advice for managers who want employees to write explicit business documents." That chapter explains methods you can use successfully to improve your employees' writing and what methods will not work. All business people can write clearly and effectively. They just need to learn the best practices in this book.

The Business Writing Center offers training in the best practices and in a variety of specialized areas of writing. You can read about them at http://writingtrainers.com.
